Lighting up Gardens by the Bay in September with lanterns, we checked out this nice evening activity to bring the kids to, right after work. We reached there at around 6.30pm. Ate Mac’s there for dinner as it was drizzling. Walk walk, watched shows and were back home by 9.15pm.
Date: 4 - 22 September 2024
Time: 6 - 10pm
Fee: Free
Be prepared for crowds and bring along water. You will get thirsty!
This isn’t your usual lantern that you swing along as you walk, it isn’t even the lanterns that you hang up on buildings. These are massive lantern structures, depicting local scenes in Singapore, times of nostalgic pasts.
The very start has a towering lantern building with local scenes that you can walk through.
Here we are inside one side of the lantern house. No it’s not a painting! Behind us is a giant house made out of soft fabric.
So many cute lantern displays to see, while walking through lantern column arches. Chinese style of course, reminiscent of the red Japanese Tori arches. The kids said the penguin was eating ramen (and not noodles) 🤭
Along the path to the Supertree grove, there’s a display of hand painted lanterns that light up the walkway.
The lantern installations got even bigger in the Supertree grove. Didn’t manage to take pictures with all of them as we wanted to catch the light shows.
7.45pm-8pm: Garden Rhapsody (show timings)
8-8.15pm: Borealis (show timings)
Fee: Free
Note: Check the show timings so you don’t miss them! Eg. Borealis is only on Mon, Sat, Sun.
People were gathered facing the main Supertree and sat on the floor waiting for the show to start. We didn’t want to sit on the damp floor (it was raining earlier) so we squatted, so as not to block other people’s view. After 10mins, I tore the happy meal box and put it on the ground for us to sit on. 🤭
TIP: Bring along a picnic mat or something to sit on, because you can’t squat for half an hour!

There were food stalls in the Supertree Grove! Fashioned to look like a pasar malam (night market), you can get local bites like Muah Chee, Tutu kueh, Teochew Oyster cake and more.
The 2-year old was starting to get tired, so we decided to head back. Walked through the carnival section where you could play many games including an air rifle shooting booth. Wanted to let the boy have a go but it was 7 tokens for 4 shots. High probability he will miss all. So we just watched as a young couple played.
As we walked away, the young man came up to us and offered the kids the soft toys he won! Such a nice and generous couple. 🥰 The kids were estatic!
Carnival games fee: 25 tokens for $25
Loop back to the car park and we have large-sized rabbit, dragon and butterflies hanging from the covered walkway.
Thank you Gardens by the Bay for the lovely decorations. It was a nice weekday evening and a great start to the week!
